Births, Deaths, and Life Expectancy
The Statistics NZ report shows an increase in the national birthrate of 5.8% from last year. Births for the year ending June 2007 totalled 61,610.
Further, it reports that a number of other low-fertility countries, such as Australia, England, Sweden and France have all experienced slight recoveries in their fertility rates recently.
The statistics show an increase in fertility rates across all age groups. The highest birth rate was among women aged 30-34 (127 per 1000 women), followed by those aged 25-29 (111 births per 1000 women). The median age of women giving birth remained much the same as before, at just over 30. There has been a slight drop in the NZ infant mortality rate – from 7.1 per 1000 in 1997 to 5.0 in the year to June 2007.
Life expectancy between the sexes continues to narrow – from 6.4 years in 1975 to 4 years this year. The average life expectancy for women is now 81.9 years, and for men 77.9 years. In the June 2007 year, the total number of deaths in NZ was 28,460. Of these, 310 were deaths of infants under one year of age.

Middlemore Memories
In October we will be moving into our new facility and while we are all looking forward to the move, it is also time to say goodbye to our present unit. Middlemore Women’s Health Unit, holds many stories, some of them told and many of them not. It is important to keep these memories alive and therefore it has been decided to do this, by compiling a booklet of “staffs stories”. We would like to invite staff (and past staff) to write your most loved story at Middlemore Hospital, Women’s Health Unit. It needn’t be long.
Stories need to be submitted by the 31st August 2007 Stories can be submitted to: Thelma Thompson – tthompson@middlemore.co.nz Kathy Ogilvy – kogilvy@middlemore.co.nz
